Our Story

Piper M Novick, the founder, and owner of Happy Dogs Training, embarked on her journey in dog training in 2009 when she discovered dog agility with her sheltie, Happy.  This sport ignited Piper's passion for dog training as she enjoyed the challenges and teamwork required. In her early teens Piper shadowed under trainers and worked other jobs, including pet sitting and dog walking, all while building her training business. And she focused on advancing her education in the industry to offer her own clients comprehensive and evidence-based training programs.

In 2019, Piper rebranded as Happy Dogs Training LLC. The name was chosen to pay tribute to the dog that started it all, and to reflect Piper's commitment to training with positive reinforcement and non-coercive methods.

Since then, countless wagging tails and smiling owners have helped us reach where we are today. The passion and enthusiasm for dog training that sparked Piper’s ambition still fuels her every day to help owners create a happy and healthy life for their dogs. This mission is shared by all trainers on the Happy Dogs’ staff who strive to help owners understand and communicate effectively with their dogs.

Happy Dogs is a women-led, small business determined to improve the lives of dogs and owners in a big way.

Melanie Harris

She/Her

Agility Instructor

Melanie started her agility career when she moved to Colorado in 2010. The story begins with her 9-year-old Labrador Mix Satine and her Boxer Ace. Ace was scared of the world and she wanted something that could help build his confidence. Agility brought out a whole different side to him as he grew more and more confident and learned to have fun. He even competed in a few local agility trials. It was those humble beginnings that have now become an obsession.

She now competes with her her Labrador/Husky Mix, Kailani, and her Border Collie/Whippet Mix, BeMo. Melanie also has a retired boxer named Morgie that went on to win 9 championships in multiple venues. Kailani is on her 11th championship and has gone on to compete on the national stage in a variety of venues including the AKC National Finals. She also trained and took her parent's Australian Shepherd to a 2nd place podium win at NADAC Champs. That is where Melanie's specialty comes in-she has a deep appreciation and understanding of what it takes to be successful in different agility venues such as UKI, USDAA, AKC, NADAC, and ASCA. She works with building a very well-balanced dog that can handle the more technical maneuvers as well as the distance challenges.

Melanie has seen what a huge difference training agility with a positive approach can do for her dogs and can't wait to help others create that same game for their beloved dogs. Melanie lives in Aurora, Colorado with her wonderful husband and three dogs.

Kasey Dugan

She/Her

Agility Assistant Trainer

Kasey's fascination and love of animal behavior and communication started in childhood. Kasey was fortunate to grow up with horses and had many wonderful horse and dog companions. The dog that first piqued Kasey's interest in dog training was an extremely smart Border Collie mix named Piper. They did many training classes together including Agility and completing Canine Good Citizen. Piper was Kasey's first experience with herding breeds and herding breeds continue to hold a special place in her heart.

Kasey previously taught horseback riding lessons and trained rescue horses before shifting her focus to dog behavior and training in 2019. She enjoys helping others realize the importance of recognizing animals as fellow, sentient beings and her personal mission is to grow and nurture relationships based on trust, respect, choice, and games and play-based learning.

Horses have taught her so much about the importance of friendship, understanding, cooperation, out-of-the-box thinking, and individualized and customizable interactions and training. She incorporates these valuable lessons and philosophies into her approach with dogs and their families. When not hanging out with dogs or growing her dog training knowledge and skillset, Kasey volunteers at a horse sanctuary and is "mom" to a few of the resident horses.

Let us spark your love for training!
